In British Columbia, a fee is assessed against the estate of each person when they die. This fee is known as the "probate fee" and is based upon the value of the estate:
If the value of an estate is less than $25,000, no probate fees are payable.
If the value of the estate is more than $25,000, but less than $50,000, then the probate fee is $6 for every $1,000 (or part of $1,000) by which the value of the estate exceeds $25,000.
If the value of the estate is more than $50,000, then the probate fee is $14 for every $1,000 (or part of $1,000) by which the value of the estate exceeds $50,000, plus $150.
